Under-23 Men's Exhibition

U-23s shutout Hershey Wildcats 4-0.

ANNVILLE, Pa. (Tuesday, April 18, 2000) -- Behind the strength and speed of their "Forward Foursome" -- true forwards Conor Casey, Chris Albright, Josh Wolff and attacking midfielder/withdrawn forward Landon Donovan -- the United States under-23 men scored a pair of goals in each 35-minute half to defeat the A-League's Hershey Wildcats 4-0 in the in a cold and rainy exhibition today at Lebanon Valley College.

In its final tune-up before facing Honduras to start the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament, the U.S. opened the scoring on a Wildcats' own goal in seventh minute after a defender headed in an Albright cross.

Five minutes later, Casey knocked in the rebound of his original shot to put the U.S. up 2-0.

"I thought we played well, but the cold affected us a little bit," said Casey, who led the NCAA Division I ranks in scoring last year (23 goals, 7 assists, 53 points) and leads the U-23s in scoring with six goals and two assists in seven overall matches in 2000. "It was a good start for us here in Hershey."

In the second half, substitutes Donovan and Wolff struck for the other two goals. Donovan finished a Wolff cross in the 58th minute, while Wolff took a pass from defender Ramiro Corrales, dribbled around a defender and the goalkeeper and walked it over the goal line in the 67th minute to put the finishing touches on the game.

Midfielders DaMarcus Beasley and John O'Brien were the only U-23's that did not appear in the match. Not only was the game the team's third scrimmage in seven days, it was the third scrimmage they have played in the rain or slippery conditions. O'Brien arrived last night from his professional club Ajax of Amsterdam.
