Reyna goes down with apparently serious knee injury.
Americans Abroad Reyna's Sunderland season is over after knee diagnosis is as bad as expected.
By Robert Wagman
(Thursday, November 1, 2002) -- Claudio Reyna's English Premier League season is over after it was confirmed today that the American midfielder has a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. Scans revealed that Reyna, who was carried off the field on a stretcher from Sunderland's 1-1 draw at Bolton Monday, faces at least six months on the sidelines. U.S. national-team staff doctor and orthopedic surgeon Bert Mandelbaum flew to England to see Reyna and deliver the bad news. Reyna's surgery, which will be performed by Mandelbaum in Los Angeles, cannot be scheduled until the swelling in the knee is reduced, but should be done in two-to-three weeks. The news comes as a huge blow to Sunderland (2-6-3, 9 points), which is next to last in the Premier League, and Black Cats manager Howard Wilkinson, who is facing an injury crisis just three weeks after taking over for Peter Reid. "It's always a big blow to lose good players, but unfortunately that's life," Wilkinson said. "Claudio's problem is someone else's opportunity. His credentials are there for all to see, but for the immediate and mid-term future, he will not be available, and that's a blow." Reyna, 29, joins fellow internationals Thomas Sorensen and Thomas Myhre, the top two goalkeepers, and Jason McAteer, a midfielder, on the injury list at the Stadium of Light. Wilkinson could also be without midfielder Julio Arca for a spell after the young Argentinian suffered an ankle injury playing for the reserves against Manchester United last night. The full extent of the injury will not be known until Arca undergoes X-rays over the weekend, but he is ruled out of the Black Cats' trip to Charlton on Sunday. The next major competition for the U.S. men is the Confederations Cup June 18-29 in France. At this year's World Cup, Reyna indicated he was planning on a hiatus from the national team, but there was a good chance the captain would soften his stance by next summer when the Confederations Cup is followed by the Gold Cup two weeks later. If Reyna is interested in playing and rehabilitated sufficiently, the two competitions might offer him a good venue to start his comeback. Even if he is not ready, the chance to work with the assembled national team might be a great opportunity for him to work back into form.
