(Tuesday, November 5, 2002) -- All three American goalkeepers playing in England posted shutouts this weekend, but only Marcus Hahnemann came away with a victory.

Hahnemann made several nice saves, leading Reading past Milwall 2-0 in the First Division. His best stop came with 16 minutes remaining in regulation when he parried a dangerous close-range shot by Dennis Wise.

Kasey Keller was only nominally busy in the Tottenham Hotspurs net during a 0-0 Premier League draw with Chelsea. Spurs dominated, but were consistently thwarted by Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini who made spectacular saves on shots from Jamie Redknapp and Teddy Sheringham.

Keller was fortunate around the 60th minute when Mario Melchiot's sharp header got past him, but hit a post. In the 12th minute, Keller denied Gianfranco Zola after Melchiot put him through.

Keller almost got himself in trouble late after referee Rob Styles, who showed four yellow cards in the final 20 minutes, awarded Chelsea a contentious free kick. Keller, displaying his sharp disagreement with the call, furiously kicked the ball away with Styles showing him a yellow card and moving the free kick 10 yards closer to the edge of the box.

Zola, however, skied the kick high over the crossbar. Earlier in the half, Zola nearly scored, but was forced by Keller to shoot wide and he hit the post.

Brad Friedel was not called on to make a difficult stop in goal, but Blackburn Rovers could not build on the strong defensive effort and played a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Rovers were frustrated by Villa keeper Peter Enckelman who made several spectacular saves. Rovers striker Andy Cole had several chances, but his poor finishing continues.

In the First Division, U.S. midfielder Eddie Lewis produced his second strong match in a row, assisting two tallies for Preston North End in a 3-1 defeat of Burnley.

Dominating the left flank all afternoon, Lewis helped get Preston on the board in the third minute. He beat several defenders down the sideline and fed Ricardo Fuller who drilled a right-footed strike from 12 yards past keeper Marlon Beresford for a 1-0 lead.

In the 66th minute, with Preston ahead 2-0, Lewis again did some nice work to get the ball to Fuller who slipped past his defender, cut inside and rifled a right-footed shot that flew into the top corner. In the 87th minute, Lewis was replaced by defensive midfielder Marlon Broomes.

U.S. attacker Jovan Kirovski was dressed, but did not play for Birmingham City which downed Bolton Wanderers 3-1. Midweek, Kirovski was solid, contributing two assists, for the City reserves who dominated Sheffield Wednesday 3-1.

In the Premier League, American attacker Joe-Max Moore continues to work himself back into playing condition after a long injury layoff. It is hoped he will see his first action of the season Monday in Everton's reserve match against Bolton.

In the Second Division, American midfielder John Thorrington did not dress for Huddersfield Town in a 1-0 setback to Cheltenham.

In the German Bundesliga, U.S. defender Gregg Berhalter turned in one of his best matches for Energie Cottbus which still fell 1-0 to Schalke after conceding a late goal. Despite a strong effort by the Cottbus back line, Andreas Moller was able to capitalize on a defensive error with 10 minutes remaining for the game's only goal.

Hannover 96 is showing signs of life after a disastrous start to its first season in the first division since promotion, playing impressively on both ends to defeat VfL Wolfsburg 3-1. U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo was solid on the right side before he picked up a minor knock and came out in the 67th minute in favor of Markus Schuler.

FC Nürnberg was equally strong in notching a 2-1 home triumph over the relegation-threatened Borussia Monchengladbach. With American Tony Sanneh playing solidly on the right side of midfield, Nürnberg controlled much of the action. Two minutes into stoppage time, Sanneh picked up a yellow card.

In Second Bundesliga action on Friday night, St Pauli continues to have a disappointing and frustrating season, losing to Freiburg 1-0. On the decisive goal, St. Pauli central defender, American Cory Gibbs was caught singlehandedly facing two attackers, moved to mark one and the other scored.

In France, Greg Vanney was on the bench for Bastia which defeated Lille 1-0. Fellow U.S. defender David Regis did not dress for Troyes which suffered another defeat 2-0 to Guingamp and is probably near firing coach Jacky Bonnevay.
In Switzerland, FC St. Gallen scored the first goal, but was crushed by FC Wil 11-3. U.S. defender Frankie Hedjuk entered in the 23rd minute and at one point exchanged blows with an opponent in the exceedingly testy match.

Under the odd Swiss league rules, the eight teams in bottom half of the 16-team league, including St. Gallen, will play only each other for the remainder of the season following the winter break to determine who is relegated.
