(Thursday, April 13, 2006) -- United States men's manager Bruce Arena has decided against naming a preliminary World Cup roster of 35 players.

No explanation was offered as to why the announcement, to be made on ESPN Sportscenter, was cancelled. However, a U.S. Soccer Federation official said Arena would select his 23-man World Cup roster, as scheduled, May 2 on SportsCenter.

The U.S. will submit its roster at the May 15 deadline established for Germany 2006, giving Arena leeway should he need to make changes in the event of injury or other developments.

There did not seem to be much reason to pick a preliminary roster. The U.S. will play no games, nor will it practice as a team before Arena chooses his 23 for the Cup.

The Americans will report to camp May 9 in Cary, N.C., and train for approximately two weeks at the site of Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Jamaica. After breaking camp, the U.S. will play three matches -- May 23 against Morocco at The Coliseum in Nashville at 7 p.m. (ET), May 26 versus Venezuela at Cleveland Browns Stadium and May 28 against Latvia at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn..

All three games will start at 7 p.m. (ET) and will be televised by ESPN2 with Spanish-language Telemundo offering a delayed broadcast.

The American players will get a couple days off after the three games and then depart together for Germany, where the team will be based in Hamburg.

The U.S. opens the World Cup June 12 at the FIFA World Cup Stadium in Gelsenkirchen, a noon start that will be shown by ESPN2 and Spanish-language Univision. Five days later, the Americans take on Italy at Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern, a 3 p.m. game to be televised on ABC and Univision.

The U.S. completes Group E action against Ghana June 22 in Nürnberg, a 10 a.m. kickoff aired by ESPN and Univision.
