American teams carry high hopes in FIFA world championship.

With world championship at hand, U.S. under-17s are cautiously optimistic.

John Ellinger
Born: October 4, 1951.
Hometown: Ellicott City, Maryland

Profile: A veteran of numerous coaching assignments since becoming a U.S. Soccer National Staff Coach in 1992, John Ellinger is currently the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team Head Coach as well as Clive Charles' assistant with the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team. During his six-year tenure with U.S. Soccer, he has also served as head coach of the National "B" Team and as Region I (East) U-14 National Coordinator.

In addition to his duties with U.S. Soccer, Ellinger spent some time in the professional ranks, serving as the assistant coach of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew during the league's inaugural season. Ellinger coached the U.S. selection to third place at the 1997 World University Games in Italy, the best finish ever for a U.S. team in the competition.

Ellinger was head coach at Montgomery College (MD) from 1979-81, and led his squad to a No. 5 national ranking in 1980. After his stint at Montgomery, Ellinger assumed the head coaching duties at University of Maryland-Baltimore County, a post he held from 1981-90. During his nine years he spent at UM-BC, Ellinger supplemented his collegiate coaching duties with various regional assignments, including: Maryland State Coach (1982-84), Regional I Assistant Coach (1983-84), and Region I Head Coach (1984-88). He was head coach of the East during the 1985-87 U.S. Olympic Festivals. Ellinger's 1986 East squad won the gold medal.

Ellinger earned his bachelor's degree (1973) and master's degree (1974) in health and physical education from Frostburg State College in Maryland. He and his wife, Tami, reside in Laurel, Maryland, with their two daughters Leigh andBrooke, Ellinger's son Matt attends Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla.
