Women's World Cup Final

Brazil's ascends to third place on penalty kicks.

PASADENA, Calif. (Saturday July 10, 1999) -- Brazil midfielder Formiga converted a penalty kick in the sixth round as the "Samba Queens" captured third place in the Women's World Cup at the Rose Bowl.

Brazil trailed during the penalty kicks but Norway defender Silje Jorgensen missed in the third round as her 12-yard spot hit the outside of the left goalpost.

The teams traded conversions as Katia Da Silva, Maicon and Nene all beat Bente Nordby for Brazil while Brit Sandaune and Solveig Gulbrandsen scored from the spot against Maravilha for Norway, the 1995 World Cup champion.

Norway striker Ann Kristin Aarones, who shanked a shot from six yards that avoided the left side of the net in the 70th minute, ripped her attempt over the crossbar. Formiga ended the suspense moments later, beating Nordby to the lower left corner.

The consolation victory showed the marked improvement of the "Samba Queens," who were eliminated in group play in 1991 and 1995. Norway lost to the U.S. in the 1991 final but defeated Germany in 1995.

"Third place is extremely important to us," said Brazil coach Wilson. "One of our goals was to make the Olympics and be one of the top four teams in the Women's World Cup. We have achieved both."

The match was the first scoreless tie of the tournament.

Brazil averted disaster in the 30th minute when Maravilha barely chipped a backpass over the goal line. While the "Samba Queens" had possession for most of the remainder of the first half, they generated few scoring chances.

The match did not come to life until midway through the second half when Aarones missed an open goal and Pretinha broke through only to be failed by the Norwegian keeper. Hege Riise and Pretinha both had efforts well saved and Sissi almost scored from an impossible angle.

"We met a strong team," said Norway coach Per-Mathias Hogmo. "Sometimes we are lucky, sometimes we are not. I am very pleased with our performance."
