Tiebreaking procedures

The top two teams from each of eight groups will advance to the second round of the 2002 World Cup. Should there be a tie in the standings after the completion of group play, the ties will be broken in favor of teams meeting the following series of criteria.

1. Best total goal differential in group play.
2. Most total goals scored in group play.

If two or more teams remain tied after the above then:
3. Best goal differential between the teams still tied.
4. Greater number of goals scored in matches between the tied teams.
5. Drawing of lots.
