Chelsea interested in signing Gonzalo Higuain - Soccer Times

Chelsea interested in signing Gonzalo Higuain

|

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are set to make a big-money move for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain this summer. The Bianconeri needs to recoup some money after the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

To meet FFP rules the Turin-based club will have to offload one of their assets, and it seems Higuain could be the player to leave the Italian champions this summer.

Familiar with Maurizio Sarri

It seems that new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri likes to have familiar faces around him. The Italian bosses first signing was of Jorginho, who he worked with at former club Napoli. Sarri also worked with Higuain in Naples before the Argentinian international moved to Juventus in 2016. The pair are both reported to be interested in making the deal happen.

Higuain a prolific goalscorer

Gonzalo Higuain has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career. The 30-year-old seems to have scored goals for every club he has represented. His strike-rate of 55 goals in 105 appearances for Juventus in all competitions is impressive.

Last season he found the net 23 times in 50 competitive appearances, so he has not lost his touch in front of goal unless he is in an Argentina short that is. He endured another poor international tournament with La Albiceleste at World Cup 2018, missing some good chances and producing lacklustre performances.

Chelsea lacked a prolific goalscorer last season after the sale of Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid. His replacement former Juventus star Alvaro Morata endured a mixed campaign and is now being linked with the Stamford Bridge exit door.

On paper, Higuain looks like the perfect solution to the Blues striking problems. He has already proven in Argentina, Spain and Italy he can score goals, so a change of league is unlikely to disrupt the flow of goals.

Morata did miss many chances last season for Chelsea. The aforementioned chances were typical of ones that Higuain often scores in the club game, anyway.

Chelsea will play different style under Sarri

Signing Higuain this summer may be part of Sarri’s thinking of playing his style of football. Chelsea’s current forwards Morata and Michy Batshuayi may not fit into the Italian’s style of play, so that is why the Blues are targeting a move for Higuain.

For me, at club level, Gonzalo Higuain is an excellent finisher and would be an upgrade to the lukewarm Alvaro Morata. He will score goals, as he is a poacher and could be a good short-term signing for the Blues.

However, one concern would be that the Blues are spending big money on a striker who is in his thirties and will have virtually no sell on fee. Chelsea in the past may not have considered that factor, but the Blues have become far more financially viable in recent seasons.

There is a feeling though that if Sarri wants Higuain to lead his attack next season, then the club will make it happen, as they are keen for the master tactician to take them back to the top of the English game.
