Thierry Henry considering the role of Bordeaux head coach

|

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is considering an offer from French Ligue One club Bordeaux to become their new head coach. The report claims that the former French international is considering a number of roles.

Set to concentrate on coaching

Thierry Henry has been a regular on Sky Sports as a pundit in the last few years for the big Premier League games. However, has also been working as an assistant to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez since 2016.

He was part of Martinez’s coaching staff who guided the Red Devils to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

Henry quit his role as a Sky Sports pundit in the summer, so he could concentrate on furthering his coaching ambitions. He has already been linked with a number of high-profile jobs, including at Aston Villa and Leicester, despite both clubs currently already having bosses in place.

Bordeaux in a mess

Bordeaux boss Gus Poyet was recently suspended by the French club for criticising the owners after they sold striker Gaetan Laborde to rivals Montpellier. Poyet called the decision a grace, as the Uruguayan had not been informed about the decision to sell the player

It is fair to say that the former Chelsea boss is now living on borrowed time at the French club. The French club are expected to relieve the former Sunderland boss of his position and it seems that Henry is their preferred replacement for Poyet.

Bordeaux have started their Ligue One campaign in poor form, having lost both of their league games so far this season. They currently occupy one of the relegation berths in the French top-flight. Appointing a novice boss in Henry seems like a risky move, but he could well prove to be a shrewd appointment.

Henry could be a good head coach

A top player does not always become a top boss. Henry was a top player during his playing career for Arsenal and France. He led by example on the pitch.

During his career as a Sky pundit, he showed he has excellent knowledge of the game. His former boss at Arsene Wenger recently stated that Henry is intelligent and has all the qualities to become a boss at the top level.

Being a number one at any football club is no doubt different to being a pundit. It is also very different to being a coach or an assistant to a number one. Knowledge of the game is not all bosses need.

They need other skills that certain people do not have. Henry comes across as a smooth operator, as somebody that could be a good man-manager, yet he also has a steeliness to his character.

We will only find out if management is for Henry once he has started out on his own. Until then we are guessing if the Frenchman will be successful or not. However, he does seem to have a determination to give it go, so hopefully, he is successful, whether that is at Bordeaux or another club.

Will Thierry Henry be the next Bordeaux head coach?
