Will Yaya Toure be plying his trade in the Premier League this season?

|

Former-Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is, without doubt, one of the best midfielders to grace a Premier League pitch. However, at 35 years of age, the midfielder is in the twilight of his football career.

It seems that Toure eight-year romance with the Premier League is not yet done, as agent Dimitri Seluk decided to tweet about his client’s future on Tuesday night, writing, “Toure @YayaToure has passed a medical in London. Yaya is close to signing a new contract”.

Narrowed the field down

Seluk then added to the intrigue of ruling out both West Ham and Crystal Palace as possible destinations for the veteran midfielder. He even launched a slight dig at the Hammers saying ‘Toure was a champion so West Ham was not for him’.

Toure’s agents quotes rather narrows down his potential destinations. It leaves Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Fulham as potential destinations from the capital.

There is the possibility that Toure is just having a medical ahead to a foreign club. However, Seluk had talked about Toure wanting to stay in England, even prepared to take a heavy hit on his wages to secure a new club, so a move abroad seems unlikely.

At the end of his career

As previously mentioned Toure was once a great player. In fact, he played a pivotal role in helping Manchester City become the force they are now in the Premier League. Without his commanding performances in the centre of the Citizens midfield, they may never have won their first Premier League title, never mind the three they have won.

Toure’s influence at City has been on the wane for a good while now. Last season, the midfielder made just ten top-flight appearances for the Citizens, nine of those coming from the substitute’s bench. The midfielder also made three Champions League appearances for the men from Manchester.

The previous campaign, the midfielder made 22 Premier League starts, despite a rather frosty relationship with City boss Pep Guardiola. It is clear to see age is starting to catch up with the midfielder.

Even in his prime, he had an almost lazy running style that belied his ability to get up and down the field. His agent claims he is desperate to play and fit after a summer break. Only time will tell if he can still cut it at the top level of the game.

Will he play regularly in the Premier League?

Toure’s chances of playing regular first-team football differ greatly depending on which club he joins this summer. For instance, if he joined Arsenal then his playing time would likely be limited this season, as the Gunners have just signed Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, who both need game time in north London.

However, if Toure joined Fulham, then the big midfielder would likely play far more regularly in the top-flight, as the Cottagers need to add quality and top-flight experience to their squad.

It will be interesting to see Toure’s next destination. It will also be interesting to see if he can still cut it at the top level on a regular basis.
