Ramsey set to stay at Arsenal until the end of the season

|

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey seemingly looks set for the exit at the north London club in the near future. However, it seems the Welshman is not considering leaving the Gunners in the January transfer window.

The midfielder has less than 12 months left on his contract with the north London club, so could leave as a free agent next summer.

Staying until the end of the season

There has been speculation that the midfielder may leave in the January transfer window in order for Arsenal to recoup a fee for the Welshman. However, speaking to Sky Sports, Ramsey said: “I am contracted to Arsenal and I am going to do my best now this season to try and achieve something special.

“Everything has been going great with the club. We thought we were in a position where we had agreed a deal but that’s no longer the case.

“So I just have to carry on playing my football and do my best for Arsenal this season, and I’ll leave the rest with the club now.”

Arsenal let Ramsey’s contract rundown

Not for the first time in recent decades, Arsenal has left a player’s contract to enter the last 12 months. It happened with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, with the former moving to Manchester United in January and Ozil being handed a massive £350,000 per-week new deal.

Ozil’s new deal has opened the floodgates for players demanding bigger and wage packages when signing new deals with the club. Reportedly, Ramsey and his representatives are looking for around £250,000 per-week for him to sign a new deal with the Gunners.

Rightly, so, Arsenal have now taken a hard-line stance and decided not to meet the midfielder’s extravagant demands. The majority of fans seem to be in agreement with the clubs stance.

However, the decision not to renew his contract a year ago or sell the midfielder in the summer will no doubt cost the Gunners dearly, as Ramsey is a big financial asset to the club.

Will be in-demand this summer

Aaron Ramsey has enjoyed mixed fortunes during his decade-long Arsenal career. On his day, he can be a match-winner. However, unfortunately for the Gunners, those days have not been frequent enough.

Despite his inconsistency over the last few years, Ramsey is likely to have a queue of clubs lining up to sign him on a free this summer. As there is no fee attached to the midfielder, clubs will easily be able to meet his seemingly high wage demands.

Liverpool are current favourites to sign the Wales international, with the likes of AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester United also reportedly interested in signing the 27-year-old.

All of those clubs know that signing Ramsey would mean getting a player in his prime, who could still develop into a top-class player with the right coaching. However, if Ramsey flops, then he has not cost them a massive transfer fee, so they can then sell him on at a small profit.

It seems the majority of Arsenal fans have accepted that Ramsey is set to leave for a while, so this news may not come as a surprise to them. The sort of reception he will receive at the Gunners game is unclear.
