The Champions League gameweek five proved crucial in some groups, as a number of teams, including Manchester United and Manchester City, booked their places in the knockout stages. Here is what happened in Tuesday’s clashes:
United scrape past Young Boys
Manchester United recorded a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Swiss side Young Boys to seal a spot in the knockout stages.
The Red Devils did not make it easy for themselves, though, as they missed numerous chances before finally taking the lead in stoppage-time. Marouane Fellaini latched on to a Romelu Lukaku header and fired a low shot into the corner of the net.
The goal may have sealed qualification, but United remain two points behind Italian giants Juventus in the race to top the table.
City through after draw in Lyon
Lyon held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at the Groupama Stadium, but the draw was enough to put the Citizens through to the last 16 of the competition. A draw in their final Group F game against Hoffenheim will see City finish top of the pile.
After a goalless but entertaining first half, the game burst into life on 55 minutes, as the home side took the lead. Forward Maxwel Cornet picked up the ball on the edge of the City area, cut inside and saw a good effort deflect off Zinchenko and past Ederson in the visitor’s goal.
The lead last seven minutes, as Spanish centre-back Aymeric Laporte headed home from close-range from a David Silva flick-on. Lyon regained the lead on 81 minutes, as Memphis Depay found Cornet, who fired past Ederson.
Lyon were to be denied the win with just seven minutes left on the clock. Sergio Aguero jumped high above the Lyon defence to head home from a Riyad Mahrez corner kick. The goal could prove vital in the group final reckoning. The Citizens remain the favourites to win the competition.
Real Madrid seal top spot in Group G
European champions Real Madrid secured top spot in Group E by recording a 2-0 win over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
The first half finished goalless, after an eye-catching miss from Turkish star Cengiz Under, who somehow missed from close-range when unmarked.
Real Madrid took control early in the second half. Gareth Bale capitalised on a poor headed clearance, strode forward and fired home inside the area. The Welshman was standing in an offside position, but as the ball came off a Roma defender, the strike was allowed.
The European champions doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark. Lucas Vasquez scored from close-range after striker Karim Benzema had found the winger with a headed pass.
The victory means that Los Blancos recorded wins in both their meetings with Roma, meaning that the Giallorossi can finish level on points with the team from Madrid but will have an inferior head-to-head record, so Real Madrid will win the group no matter what happens in gameweek six.
