Antoine Griezmann is finally heading to Barcelona

The will they won’t they between Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann and Barcelona is enough to rival any romantic comedy. However, it seems that the Catalan giants will finally get their man this summer, according to Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin.

Sky Sports are reporting that Marin has told a Spanish Radio station: “I am very clear about where he is going to play, it is known since March, at Barcelona.”

That seems like a pretty clear indication of where the French star will be playing next season after already stating earlier this summer that he will leave Atletico.

The move has been long mooted

Barcelona are red-hot favourites to sign the forward this summer. Most observers believed the deal was inevitable after he stated he was leaving the club from the Spanish capital after five years.

Griezmann was expected to join the Catalan giants last summer. However, he decided to stay with Los Rojiblancos and signed a new contract. From the outside looking in, the decision made little sense. If he joins Barcelona this summer then it will mean that he made the wrong choice.

Some fans concerned about signing

The signing of Griezmann would certainly seem like a positive one for Barcelona. However, some of the club’s fans are concerned about where whether the club are making the right move by bringing in another attacking player, rather than strengthening elsewhere.

No doubt most believe that the forward is a very good player. However, there is a feeling that his signing may prevent further additions to their squad.

The Blaugrana are current the favourites to sign Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. The problem is that they have already spent a reported fee of around £65million on De Ligt’s Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong.

Griezmann is likely to cost in the region of £100million. That leaves the champions with a major task signing any other new big-money players and staying within the Financial Fair Play rules.

Barcelona will likely have to offload some players this summer in an effort to balance the books slightly. The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti and Ivan Rakitic have all been linked with moves away from Catalonia.

Unfortunately for Barcelona, selling the trio may not be easy this summer, as the latter two do not want to leave the club. That would put a spanner in the works of any fresh summer arrivals.

Will be a good signing for Barcelona

For all the fans concerns of where he will play and whether his signing will stop any further summer arrivals, Griezmann is a top player. At 28 years old, he should be at his peak as a forward.

Barcelona obviously has brilliant attacking options in the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, as well as the young French forward Ousmane Dembele. The arrival of Griezmann may put the youngster’s chances of first-team football in doubt next season. That factor is also a downside for many of the club’s supporters.

Griezmann is a versatile forward, who is a top finisher. He should be a top signing for Barcelona, even if he does have to win over a small minority of fans doubting his signing.
