Can Tammy Abraham breakthrough at Chelsea next season?

|

Young Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham will be away at under-21 European Championship with England this summer. The Three Lions are one of the favourites to win the tournament before he returns to the Blues for next season.

The 21-year-old is hoping to establish himself at Stamford Bridge in the new campaign, probably under a new boss, with Frank Lampard mooted as the probable replacement for outgoing boss Maurizio Sarri.

Successful campaign at Aston Villa

Abraham played a key role for Aston Villa last season as they won promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. The youngster scored 26 times in 40 appearances in the second tier.

His goal tally was an impressive one in any league, especially a league as tough as the Championship. The spell in the Midlands was certainly more successful than his spell on loan at Swansea the previous season.

The fact that he played regular first-team football at Villa will no doubt only help his development and chances of improving in the near future.

An opportunity to shine at Chelsea

The fact that Chelsea’s strikers have not exactly lit the world on fire in recent seasons means that Abraham may just have a golden opportunity next season to play on a regular basis for the team from south west London.

Veteran French striker Olivier Giroud has been in and out of the team since his arrival from Arsenal. However, the striker signed a contract extension in May. Meanwhile, big-money Spanish striker Alvaro Morata spent last season in his homeland at Atletico Madrid on-loan. His future is uncertain, as he enjoyed a mixed spell in Madrid.

Then there is Gonzalo Higuain, who spent an unsuccessful spell at Stamford Bridge on loan from Juventus. Chelsea’s strikers struggled so badly at times last season that Belgian winger Eden Hazard played as a false number nine. The Blues will not have that option next season with Hazard’s transfer to Real Madrid now completed.

Also, the Blues are facing a two-window transfer ban, so Abraham may just benefit from the fact that his club cannot sign any players for the next 12 months.

Is he ready to play regularly in the top-flight?

Abraham is still young at 21 and he has very little experience in the Premier League. However, he has shown at Villa that he can score goals when given the opportunities.

There are question marks over whether the youngster can handle the responsibility of being the focal point of Chelsea’s attack in the new campaign. If and when he gets the chance, the youngster has to seize the opportunity.

I think if the Blues are successful with their appeal to their transfer ban, then Abraham could well once again find himself out on-loan next season. If he does make another temporary move then surely this time it has to be another Premier League club.

However, the Blues current situation means that they may need Tammy Abraham next season. Hopefully, the youngster will shine when he gets the chance, as it will be good for the player himself, club and country too.
