FPL Pre-season Ones to watch: Budget goalkeepers

|

In FPL budget goalkeepers can be worth their weight in goal. Vicente Guaita and Cardiff’s Neil Etheridge were good examples of budget goalkeepers thriving. These guys are usually the ones used for a two-goalkeeper rotation. Here are some of the budget goalkeeping options:

Mat Ryan (Brighton, £4.5m)

The Australian international has been a solid performer in his two seasons on the south coast following his move from Spanish club Valencia. However, last season he kept just six clean sheets, four fewer than his debut campaign in the top-flight for the Bluebirds. Brighton were not as solid last season in defence either. He would be a player you could consider if you were employing the rotation method with your goalkeepers.

Alex McCarthy/Angus Gunn (Southampton, £4.5m)

Both goalkeepers are a similar price. The problem is that we are unsure who will be the Saints number one next season. McCarthy played slightly more games last season, keeping four clean sheets and collecting six bonus points.

Gunn played fewer minutes, kept three clean sheets and picked up four bonus points. In terms of selection, we will have to keep a close eye on pre-season to see who will start the season as number one. Both goalkeepers have their strengths, so they will definitely be in people’s thinking for one of the two goalkeeping spots. The Saints third choice goalkeeper Fraser Forster could also feature, but the former Celtic star looks set to leave the club from the south coast this summer.

Joe Hart/Tom Heaton/Nick Pope (Burnley £4.5m)

If you thought the Southampton situation was complicated, then the Burnley goalkeeping situation is even worse. The Clarets have two England internationals Hart and Heaton, as well as promising star Pope competing for the number one jersey. Hart and Heaton both played half of the team’s games last season.

Hart collected four clean sheets and seven bonus points, while Heaton kept four clean sheets and picked up four bonus points. In reality, there was not much between them. After missing the majority of last season through injury, Pope is also likely to be in the reckoning for the number one spot next season. The Clarets were woeful in defence last season, but are expected to improve in the new campaign.

Tim Krul (Norwich, £4.5m)

The Dutch goalkeeper played all 46 Championship games last season, as the Canaries earned promotion. The 31-year-old enjoyed a strong campaign in the English second tier.

Krul was once a solid FPL option during his days at Newcastle. He could well be a good rotation option for season 2019/20 if he is paired with the right other option. However, as with most newly promoted clubs, the Canaries are one of the favourites to suffer relegation this season.

Asmir Begovic (Bournemouth, £4.5M)

The Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper did not enjoy the best of times last season with the Cherries. Eddie Howe’s expansive style of football means that the team from the south coast ten to concede a lot of goals. The former Chelsea goalkeeper kept just five clean sheets last season while picking up just four bonus points in a poor campaign. Bournemouth do have some favourable fixtures at the start of the season, though.

However, the Cherries are reportedly looking to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, with veteran Artur Boruc and youngster Mark Travers the other senior ‘keepers at the club.

The Enablers

If you are choosing to pick a premium goalkeeper, then the best strategy to take is to pick a goalkeeper who is valued at £4million. These goalkeepers are unlikely to play many games, but are cheap and enable you to have better players in other positions. A prime example is David Button of Brighton. Unless Mat Ryan is injured he is unlikely to feature for the Bluebirds. However, he works well as a second goalkeeper alongside Ederson (our choice) or Alisson.

Strategy

Having the right cheap goalkeepers and rotating them is a tough task. It takes far more skill than choosing a set and forget option. There is no right or wrong way of picking goalkeepers. People have different theories on what method is best. However, if you get the goalkeeping rotation right, then it can prove to be a profitable strategy.

Will any of the budget goalkeepers be in your FPL squad next season?
