In one of the games of gameweek four of the Europa League, Roma visits Monchengladbach with Group J delicately poised, as all four teams can still make the knockout stages of the competition.

Monchengladbach (Odds of evens for victory)

The home side has enjoyed an excellent start to their Bundesliga campaign. Marco Rose’s team are currently top of the German top-flight table after ten games. However, the Foals form has slipped of late and they have picked up just two points from their three group games in the Europa League.

They started their campaign with a shock 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Austrian outfit Wolfsberger. They have now drawn their last two group games, including the reverse fixture which finished 1-1. In spite of the poor campaign so far, the German side are only three points behind group leaders and Thursday night opponents, Roma.

The home sides recent record is not a major surprise considering that they have struggled for wins in this competition in recent seasons, winning just one of their last nine matches in Europe’s secondary competition.

Even their usually strong record on home soil has been poor in the Europa League in recent years, as they have failed to win in four games while suffering three defeats. The fact that they conceded at least two goals in three of their last four home matches in the competition has not helped their results.

Roma (Odds of 5/2 for victory)

Like Monchengladbach, Roma are enjoying a very good start to their domestic campaign, as they are currently third-place in Serie A. The Giallorossi also head into this game eight matches unbeaten in all competitions, having recorded three straight wins.

However, Paulo Fonseca’s side has not been as consistent in the Europa League as they have in Serie A. The team from Rome are unbeaten in their three group matches so far, but two of those games have finished in draws. They are unbeaten in four games in the Europa League dating back to 2017.

The visitors have been hard to beat on their travels in this competition in recent seasons, losing just one of their last eight away games in Europe’s secondary competition. On the flip-side though, the Giallorossi have also won just three of their last ten games on their travels in the Europa League, as they have drawn a lot of games on the road.

Roma have been relatively consistent in front of goal on their travels in the Europa League, scoring in all but one of their last eight away matches in the competition.

Conclusion

Both of these sides have looked far more impressive in their domestic leagues and this could be a close one. However, we are backing the away win at odds of 5/2, simply because Roma are in better form. The other bet we are going for is the under 2.5 goals at odds of 6/5, as neither team has been prolific of late in this competition.

Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 5/2 and/or the under 2.5 goals at odds of 6/5. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
