Prediction and odds for the game: Chelsea (7/10) v Arsenal (7/2)

We are backing the home win

When: Tuesday 21st January 2020, Kick-off 8:15 PM

Where: Stamford Bridge

On Tuesday night, Chelsea host Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, as both teams look to get back to winning ways after disappointing results last time out.

Chelsea

The Blues head into this midweek clash on the back of a poor 1-0 defeat at midtable Newcastle on Saturday evening. The defeat ended a three-game unbeaten run in the top-flight for Frank Lampard’s team.

Despite the loss, the team from south west London are still relatively comfortable in the Champions League spots, five points clear of the chasing pack. However, fifth-place Manchester United have a game in-hand on the Blues. That game in-hand is at league leaders Liverpool later today, though.

Lampard’s team has been highly inconsistent of late in the Premier League on home soil, losing three of their last five league games at Stamford Bridge. Despite a fairly kind recent run of home fixtures.

The Blues failed to score in all three of those recent league defeats, having scored just five times in as many home matches in the top-flight.

Arsenal

The Gunners have enjoyed mixed results since Mikel Arteta’s appointment as head coach. In fact, a 1-1 home draw with Sheffield United last time out means that the team from north London have drawn four of their first six games under Arteta.

One worrying statistic for the Gunners is that they have won just twice in their last 15 Premier League games. That statistic is a quite damning one considering the size of the club.

The team from north London has kept just two clean sheets in their last 15 Premier League outings. It must be noted, though, that both of those clean sheets have been during Arteta’s short tenure, so maybe there is a slight improvement in the Gunners defensive displays.

The visitors recent league games have been tight and low-scoring affairs, with five of their last six games producing under 2.5 goals.

Arsenal make the short trip to Stamford Bridge unbeaten in five away games in the Premier League. The problem for the Gunners is that four of those five games have finished in draws. They have also won just once in their last ten league matches on their travels. Just one clean sheet in that ten-match run of games has not helped their chances of picking up wins.

Conclusion

This game is hard to judge, as neither team are in great or terrible form. Chelsea have not been great at home of late, but they have found it hard to break down teams. However, we feel that Arsenal are still weak at the back, which why we are backing the home win.

We are also backing the under 2.5 goals. Chelsea are unpredictable, as they can be devastating or woeful in front of goal. Arsenal have not been prolific in front of goal of late, which is why we are backing then under 2.5 goals at odds of 13/10.

Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 7/10 and under 2.5 goals scored. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
