On Saturday afternoon, RB Leipzig and Freiburg return to action for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. The game is a vital one for both teams in the Premier League.

RB Leipzig

Die Roten Bullen looked set to challenge Bavarian behemoths Bayern Munich for the title with their early season form. However, the home sides form slipped slightly and the reigning champions are currently four points clear of Julian Nagelsmann’s team at the summit of the Bundesliga.

Although Leipzig were six league games unbeaten before the break, four of those had finished in draws. Those drawn games are likely to come back to haunt them if as seems likely they miss out on the German title. They also need to be beware the teams below them. Leipzig are third in the table, but fifth-place Bayer Leverkusen are just three points adrift of the home side. They cannot afford any complacency.

One major positive for Leipzig is their recent home form. They are nine games in undefeated in the German top-flight, having won on six occasions. Their renowned attacking style is a key to those good results, as they have found the net at least twice in seven of their last eight home matches in the Bundesliga.

RB Leipzig are unbeaten in four home games against Freiburg, having won the last three matches on home soil. On the flip-side, Leipzig have lost three of the last four meetings with the visitors. However, all the defeats were suffered at Freiburg.

Freiburg

Christian Streich’s team are in the thick of the battle to secure a European spot by finishing in the league’s top six. The visitors are currently just a point adrift of sixth-place Schalke, who were in woeful form before the break. Freiburg are also level on points with Wolfsburg.

If Freiburg are to have any chance of a top-six finish they will need to find some form of consistency. A record of just two wins in their last seven league matches is not one of a team with European ambitions.

Their recent away record does not bode well for European qualification either, as the visitors have won once in their last ten league matches on their travels. A generous defence has been the biggest problem for Streich’s team on the road in the German top-flight, as they have kept just one clean sheet in 19 away games.

Conclusion

RB Leipzig cannot afford to slip up in this clash. We believe that Nagelsmann’s team will come out on top. Their strong home form and attacking threat should be enough to see them past a decent Freiburg team. We are also backing the over 2.5 goals scored, as Leipzig are usually prolific on home soil.

Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 3/10 and over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/13. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
