Prediction and odds for the game: Everton (23/10) v Manchester United (11/10)

We are backing the draw at odds of 11/4

When: Wednesday, 23rd December 2020, Kick-off 20:00

Where: Goodison Park

On Wednesday night, in-form north west rivals Everton and Manchester United go head-to-head at Goodison Park in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.

Everton

Things are looking good for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, as the Toffees head into this clash on the back of a three-game winning run. The home side has seen off Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal in what was supposedly a difficult run of fixtures for the Merseysider’s. An improved in defence has led to their recent good run of results, as they have conceded just once in their recent mini winning run.

The League Cup is the only domestic trophy that Everton have failed to win in their illustrious history. This tie looks to be vital for Carlo Ancelotti’s team with the Goodison Park faithful desperate for a trophy, with the club suffering from their worse trophy drought ever.

The Toffees have had a relatively comfortable run to the last eight, beating lower league Salford and Fleetwood before a 4-1 hammering of fellow Premier League outfit West Ham in the last round.

This history of this fixture is very much against Everton of late, as the Toffees have won just one of the last 12 meetings with the Toffees in all competitions. The most recent meeting in November saw the Red Devils recorded a 3-1 win at Goodison Park.

Manchester United

Like the home team, Manchester United seem to have hit a purple patch of form. The Red Devils hammered old rivals Leeds 6-2 at Old Trafford last time out to move into third place in the top-flight table. The game saw another good day in front of goal for the Red Devils, who have now scored at least two goals in six of their last eight outings in all competitions.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial have looked dangerous in front of goal. However, they will face a test against Everton’s newfound defensively solidity. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team like to hit on the counter, but the Toffees full-backs will very rarely venture forward, cutting out the space for the counter.

United have played all their Carabao Cup games away from home so far, beating arch-rivals Manchester City, Luton Town and Brighton.

Conclusion

These are two of the most in-form teams in the Premier League at the moment. The two head coaches have rested players in previous rounds, but with the prospect of winning a trophy at stake, both are likely to field strong line-ups.

United are in good form, but so are Everton, especially their defence, so this will not be an easy game for either team. With that in mind, we are backing the draw after 90 minutes. We also believe it could be a relatively tight game, so we are also backing under 2.5 goals scored.

Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 11/4 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 11/10. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
