According to Sky Sports and other British media, Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane has told the north London club that he wishes to leave this summer. The news will not come as a major surprise, as there has been speculation over the striker’s happiness at Spurs for a long time.

A lack of investment in the squad

The main reason for Kane’s wish to leave is that Tottenham seems to lack any sort of direction as a club and a team. The club’s hierarchy have come in for criticism from the fans for a lack of investment in the team.

Spurs were never going to challenge at the top level of the game by breaking even or spending a minimum on their squad. The team from north London did reach the Champions League final in 2019, only to lose 2-0 to Liverpool. That performance had a lot to do with the managerial influence of Mauricio Pochettino.

His replacement Jose Mourinho always seemed a strange fit but wasn’t backed in the transfer market. The players that did arrive were not exactly great successes either. In short, the players are not good enough to match the ambition of the outstanding Kane.

Kane is too good for Tottenham

The level of Harry Kane’s ability is far above the rest of his teammates. He is a prolific goalscorer and also a provider, as he scored 29 goals and produced 17 assists for club and country in 52 appearances this season.

The 27-year-old’s level of consistency has hardly dropped since his breakthrough into the Tottenham first-team. When talking about out-and-out number nines, Kane is up there with the best in the world. Probably only Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski could claim to be a better out-of-out forward.

In many ways, Kane is too good for Tottenham, whose direction is highly unclear at the moment. The club from north London are manager-less. However, whoever they appoint this summer as head coach is unlikely to turn their arguably mediocre players into world-class performers. Kane is 28 this summer and cannot afford to waste any more of his career with a team that is unlikely to give him the success he craves.

It seems more likely than ever he will leave

There has been speculation in the past that Kane would leave Tottenham. However, reports suggest the north London club are scouting possible replacements in case Kane moves on this summer. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is of course famous for his negotiation skills, the England international is unlikely to be allowed to exit the club with a massive fee.

Reportedly, though, the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all interested in signing the forward. After the financial effect of Covid, it remains to be seen if even the richest clubs in England can afford a mega fee for Kane.

For the player himself, this summer could a pivotal one in his career. If he stays at Spurs, he could become a legend, but he may not have any silverware to show for his career at the end of it. Understandably, he would want to move on and make the most of what’s left of his football career.
