On Friday evening, Iberian giants Spain and Portugal clash in Madrid, as both teams look for vital game time in preparations for the European Championships.

Spain

La Furia Roja head into Euro 2020 with a relatively inexperienced squad, so head coach Luis Enrique will be keen for some of his players to pick up valuable minutes against top-class opposition, and Portugal are certainly that.

Spain have been difficult to beat on the international stage of late, as they have lost just one of their last 22 matches in all competitions. Luis Enrique’s team has been impressive in front of goal of late, scoring at least two goals in three of their last four international matches. Both Manchester City’s Ferran Torres and RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo have scored in the home team’s last two games.

They have also been hard to defeat on home soil in friendlies of late, losing just one of their last ten friendly matches on home soil, while recording seven wins in the process.

Portugal

Like their opponents, the Selecao head into Euro 2020 with an exciting group of players. Fernando Santos’ team are unbeaten in four international matches, having recorded three wins in the process. They have also scored at least two goals in all three of their last four outings. Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has certainly found his goalscoring boots of late, as the former Wolves star has scored three goals in his last two appearances for the reigning European Championships.

Their recent outings have certainly offered entertaining fare, as five of their last seven international matches have produced over 2.5 goals.

One issue that may be a concern for the visitors is that they have not kept a clean sheet in their last five international matches, following a run of five straight clean sheets. They will have to improve defensively if they want to retain their European Championship crown.

Portugal have endured mixed fortunes on their travels of later in friendly games, as they have won just two of their last five away friendly matches. Their most recent friendly matches on the road have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in five of their last seven games.

Conclusion

These two teams are full of promise and potential. The most recent matches between the two neighbours have been close affairs, as the last three meetings have finished in draws. We are backing this game to finish all square too. Despite the recent high-scoring games from both teams, we believe this will be a cagier affair, so we are also backing under 2.5 goals scored.

Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 23/10 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 3/4 (All odds are taken from Bet365)
