Prediction and odds for the game: England (6/4) vs Germany (19/10)

We are backing the home win

When: Tuesday, 29th June 2021, Kick-off 17:00

Where: Wembley Stadium

On Tuesday night, England and Germany clash at Wembley in the last-16 of Euro 2020, with both teams eying up a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition.

England

The home side made it through to the knockout stages of Euro 2020 by picking up seven points from their group games. They defeated Croatia and the Czech Republic 1-0 with a goalless draw against neighbours Scotland wedged in between.

England head coach Gareth Southgate has developed a reputation for his pragmatism. His measured approach during Euro 2020 is seemingly paying off, as the Three Lions are yet to concede a goal during the tournament while conceding just once in their last nine international outings.

The Three Lions stout defensive displays have led to their games being, close and low-scoring of late, with their last five matches producing under 2.5 goals.

England seems unlikely to start Chelsea pair Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell, who will come out of ten-day isolation on the same day this game takes place. The England head coach may well go with the same 11 that beat the Czech Republic, although the likes of Kieran Trippier and Phil Foden could also come in if Southgate decides to switch systems to a back three.

Germany

Joachim Low’s team have been through a spectrum of emotions at Euro 2020, in the experienced coaches last tournament in charge of Die Mannschaft. In the end, Germany finished second to France in the toughest group at Euro 2020, while picking up four points.

However, their hopes of qualification did lie in tatters late into their last group game against Hungary, only for Leon Goretzka to pop up with a late goal to earn them a 2-2 draw. The result catapulted Low’s team from the bottom of the group into second place.

There is a sense of not knowing which German team will turn up so far at Euro 2020. The high point of the tournament so far for Die Mannschaft was a 4-2 defeat of Portugal in their second group match. The key to that win was the involvement of wing-back’s Robin Gosens and Joshua Kimmich. Their effectiveness may lead to England changing their formation to match up to opponents.

Germany have major doubts over the fitness of Lukas Klostermann and Jonas Hofmann. Ilkay Gundogan and Antonio Rudiger also have slight problems but are expected to feature. Leon Goretzka may well start this game on the bench.

Conclusion

England have been rather subdued in an attacking sense at Euro 2020, while Germany have been unpredictable. It could be argued that neither team has been at their best, with individual stars not shining. We feel that that game will be a tight, tactical battle and are backing the home advantage to give England a narrow victory. It seems unlikely to be a high-scoring clash, so are backing under 2.5 goals scored too.

Verdict: We are backing the England win at odds of 6/4 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
