It’s the international break, a time that turns off some football fans. England headed to Andorra on Saturday night for their World Cup qualifier. The game produced a typically high-scoring outing for Gareth Southgate’s team, as a largely fringe team swept aside the minnows, recording a 5-0 victory for the Three Lions.

One player who stood out for the visitors, even against such modest opposition was Manchester City wonderkid Phil Foden. The youngster was the man of the match after a highly influential performance.

Could Foden be England’s Tom Brady?

Foden seems to be maturing with every game. Taking aside the opposition, the youngster simply ran the show, grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck. He played in a role that was far deeper than usual and enjoyed himself by straying passes around. However, due to his football intelligence, a change of position didn’t seem to faze him. Whatever position he plays in, he seems to have a big impact. The youngster seemed to thrive in his role dictating the game.

After the game, former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, who is often a hard man to please said of Foden: “I love my American Football and Foden has been like a top quarterback. He’s been like Tom Brady. He’s just picking people out. He’s got runners and he’s got wide-receivers. He’s making it look so easy.”

It was a rather apt description of a player, who is still just 21 years of age. His display against Andorra will obviously draw the ‘it was only Andorra’ shouts. However, the fact that he was one of the stars of the show against Liverpool before the international break may be a better barometer of his ability. He had a slow start to the campaign, but the midfielder is now showing his sheer talent.

Foden has the potential to be world-class

The media sometimes go overboard on young English players. However, Phil Foden’s promise is not intangible xG or just what could be. The young midfielder is producing goals, assists and an often significant impact on games. This is not hype, this is reality.

If he continues to develop how he has done in recent seasons, Foden has the potential to be that rare breed, that world-class English footballer. The fact that he is playing under a top coach like Pep Guardiola at City will only benefit him. The Catalan boss played a key role in developing the great Lionel Messi during his time with both the B and senior team during his time with the Blaugrana.

From what Phil Foden has shown in the past year, if he is not already a key player for club and country, he will be in the near future. The midfielder just seems to have all the attributes to be a player who controls games on a regular basis and no doubt will do for years to come.
