Prediction and odds for the game: Tottenham (6/5) vs West Ham (12/5)

We are backing the home win

When: Wednesday 22 December 2021, Kick-off 19:45

Where: The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

On Wednesday night, London rivals Tottenham and West Ham go head-to-head at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a place in the last four of the Carabao Cup.

Tottenham

The fortunes of Spurs have certainly improved since the appointment of elite Italian head coach Antonio Conte. The team from north London have lost just one of the seven games since the former Chelsea bosses’ appointment.

They will take great heart from a 2-2 home draw with title-challenging Liverpool last time out. They may even feel slightly disappointed only to get a draw, as they made enough chances to win the game.

Tottenham’s Carabao Cup journey started before Conte’s arrival as boss. The home side has a decent recent record in the competition, as they have lost just once in their last six games in the League Cup. The only defeat in the run was in last years final against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. In this season’s competition, Spurs have beaten Wolves on penalty kicks and last time out recorded a 1-0 win at Burnley.

West Ham

After a stellar start to their campaign, West Ham’s form has slumped slightly in recent weeks. A 2-0 loss at Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal in their last outing means that the Irons have won just one of their last six matches in all competitions. A lack of clean sheets has been a problem of late for the Hammers, as they have kept out their opponents just twice in their previous 11 competitive matches. Problems to key defenders have been a contributing factor to that poor recent defensive record though.

Like their hosts, West Ham have a decent recent record in the Carabao Cup, as they have lost just one of their previous five games in the competition while recording three wins in normal time and one in extra time. This season the Irons have eliminated both Manchester United and Manchester City, without conceding a goal in the process.

West Ham have been inconsistent on their travels in the Carabao Cup, winning three and losing three of their last six away games in the League Cup.

Conclusion

Tottenham will have taken a lot of positives from the draw against Liverpool last time out. We are backing the home win, as West Ham could once again be missing several of their first-choice defenders. The other recommendation we are backing is over 2.5 goals scored, as Spurs tend to be prolific on home soil, even if the north London club decide to field a weakened team.

Our Tips: we are backing the home win at odds of 6/5 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 19/20. (All odds are taken from Bet365)
