Prediction and odds for the game: Milan (10/11) vs Roma (14/5)

We are backing the home win

When: Thursday 6 January 2022, Kick-off 17:30

Where: The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

On Thursday evening, Milan and Roma face off at San Siro in one of the biggest games of gameweek 20 in Serie A.

Milan

The Rossoneri have become genuine Scudetto contenders in recent seasons. Last season they fell short and arch-rivals Inter took the title. This season could be a case of history repeating itself. After a good start to their league campaign, Stefano Pioli’s team are now four points behind the Nerazzurri following a slight stumble before the winter break.

Milan took just a point from games against Udinese and Milan before ending 2021 with a 4-2 win at mid-table Empoli. The men from Milan will need to retain an incredible consistency in the second half of the season if they are to stay in touch with their eternal rivals at the top of the table. Their most recent form at San Siro has not been great, as one win from their last four outings in the Italian top-flight indicates.

The Rossoneri will miss some key players due to AFCON call-ups, with influential midfielder Franck Kessie joined by Ismael Bennacer and Fode Ballo-Toure in joining up with their national teams ahead of the prestigious tournament.

Roma

Former Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho has endured mixed fortunes so far in his time in the eternal city. However, the Giallorossi are currently sixth-place in the Italian top-flight table, just six points adrift of the Champions League spots.

A 1-1 draw with Sampdoria at the Stadio Olimpico in their last game of last year means that that Roma are undefeated in their last four games in all competitions, having recorded three wins and a draw. The result against Samp did slightly curtail any winning momentum Roma had heading into the winter break.

The visitors recent away form in Serie A has been inconsistent. However, Mourinho and co. will not be happy with losing five of their last eight matches on their travels in the Italian top-flight. One positive for Roma of late on their travels has been their attacking prowess, as the Giallorossi have scored at least two goals in eight of their previous ten away games.

Like their hosts, Roma will have to do without several players due to AFCON call-ups, with Amadou Diawara and Felix Afena-Gyan the main players from the visitors representing their countries at the competition in Cameroon.

Conclusion

In a way, the winter break came at a good time for Milan, as their form started to drift. The Rossoneri have now had a chance to regroup, albeit with the influential Kessie. Pioli’s team need to start improving their home form and we believe they will record a victory in a high-scoring encounter. Therefore, the two bets we are backing are over 2.5 goals scored and the home win.

Our Tips: We are backing the home win at odds of 10/11 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
