Newcastle could seriously strengthen their squad in the next few days

This season has been another tough one for everybody connected with Newcastle United Football Club. The Magpies had the up of getting a new ambitious owner group, but the team are still fighting near the bottom of the Premier League table. However, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for the Magpies, especially as they could well strengthen their squad before the January transfer window shuts.

Linked with a quartet of signings

Newcastle have already brought in England full-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. The north east club will know that they still need to bring in more quality before the transfer window slams shut in less than a week.

That is likely why the Magpies are being linked with moves for Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos, Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard and Tottenham’s attacking midfielder Dele Alli. All three would be massive signings for the north east club.

Carlos has been linked with a move to several of Europe’s top clubs in recent seasons after impressing for Sevilla. Reports suggest that Newcastle would have to pay around £38million for the 28-year-old centre-back. They have an alternative in Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic according to the Daily Mail anyway. If Newcastle can get one or both players it would certainly improve their central defensive options.

Lingard and Alli would add a different attacking dimension

While the north east club pursue defensive signings, the signings of Lingard and Alli would add a different attacking dimension to the Magpies team. Both players would arrive with something to prove to their doubters.

The Guardian claim that Newcastle are attempting to hammer out a loan deal for Lingard, who will be a free agent at the end of the current campaign. The 29-year-old was superb in a loan spell at West Ham in the second part of last season. Reportedly, he prefers a return to the Hammers than a switch to the north east. However, he may have to wait until the summer to secure a move back to David Moyes’ outfit.

Dele Alli has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham. It seems that the time is right for the attacking midfielder to make a move to revive his career. The Daily Express claim that Newcastle is in talks with Tottenham to sign Alli on loan until the end of the season. Spurs head coach Antonio Conte is believed to have sanctioned a temporary move for the England international in January.

In better shape than a few weeks ago

Things seem to be looking up for Newcastle in recent weeks. A 1-0 win at Leeds United last time out could prove to be the catalyst to a rise up the table. The north east team are now just a point from safety, with a game in hand on 17th place Norwich, who recently sacked head coach Claudio Ranieri.

Their next Premier League game is a home outing against crisis-club Everton. Another victory and the team from the north east could be out of the relegation zone and just a point behind the men from Merseyside in the table.

The Magpies survival may well depend on which players they bring in before the transfer window shuts. However, the current squad of players have shown that they may already have enough to beat the drop to the Championship this season.
