We are now on our third instalment of articles looking at the best FPL assets (excluding premium players). We have covered goalkeepers and defenders. Today we will cover the game’s best budget or value midfield options. Here are your midfield options for FPL season 2022/23:

(Please note that several midfielders at £ 8 million represent excellent value. However, we have decided to select just players lower than £7.5million on our list)

Anthony Gordon (Everton, £5.5m)

The homegrown hero enjoyed a real breakthrough Premier League campaign with Everton last season. The 21-year-old scored four top-flight goals and produced three assists from 25 starts and ten substitute appearances.

Those are not great numbers for an attacking player. However, Gordon was playing in a struggling Everton team last season. For a budget option, who also takes set-pieces, he could well prove to be a superb asset in FPL. One issue is the fact that there are so many good midfield options.

Jadon Sancho (Manchester United, £7.5m)

The England international struggled to make an impact at Manchester United after a summer move from Dortmund. The youngster scored three goals and produced four assists for the Red Devils.

His numbers were nowhere near the same level he managed at BVB. However, now that he is more accustomed to the league and with an attack-minded head coach in charge in Erik ten Hag, we might finally see the best of Sancho, who has such undoubted ability and potential.

If he makes a good start to the season, then his price could rise significantly, so at his price tag of £7.5m, Sancho could prove to be one of those often-seen FPL bargains.

Fred (Manchester United, £5.5m)

Sancho’s United teammates attacking numbers were surprising last season for a player who we don’t associate with being a player who threatens the goal often. In fact, the Brazilian midfielder scored four goals and produced five assists. Only Bruno Fernandes from the United midfielders picked up more points last season in FPL.

At £5.5m, like Gordon, he is a good enabler if you wish to attempt to bring in premium players elsewhere in your team. The midfielder is even a handy bench option, rather than having a non-playing £4.5m player and running the risk of having a gameweek without 11 players.

Emile Smith Rowe (Arsenal, £6m)

While many are flocking to select teammate Gabriel Martinelli, Smith Rowe offers another option at £6m. The youngster enjoyed a stellar campaign last season and became one of the bargains of the FPL season. The midfielder scored ten goals and made a further two assists in Mikel Arteta’s exciting young team.

His scoring record meant he earned more points than the much-fancied Martinelli last season. The one caveat with Smith Rowe is that he could be a rotation risk. However, that also applies to Martinelli as well. If either plays regularly, then they may well still be FPL bargains in the new season.
