Prediction and odds for the game: Manchester United (15/4) vs Liverpool (13/20)

We are backing Liverpool half-time/full-time at odds of 8/5

When: Monday 22 August 2022, Kick-off 20:00

Where: Old Trafford

On Monday night, Manchester United hosts Liverpool at Old Trafford in a big north west derby in the Premier League.

Manchester United

The Red Devils have made a nightmare start to the new Premier League campaign, losing both their opening matches of the campaign against Brighton and Brentford. The latter, a 4-0 defeat, was particularly concerning, as it was 4-0 at half-time.

The woeful start to the new Premier League campaign has just continued from a poor end to last season for United. In fact, the men from Manchester have now suffered four straight league defeats in the English top-flight. They have also lost six of their last eight matches in the Premier League.

One slight positive for Manchester United is that they have been difficult to beat on home soil of late in the Premier League. A 2-1 defeat against Brighton in their last home match ended a nine-game unbeaten run for the Red Devils in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s team have enjoyed an underwhelming start to their Premier League campaign, drawing their opening two league matches against Fulham and last time out Crystal Palace. The points return is certainly not what most fans expected at this point of the campaign from the Merseysiders.

The two draws at least continued Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the Premier League, which now stands at 21 games. Their last league defeat came way back in December against Leicester.

One aspect of their game that Liverpool needs to improve is their defensive solidity. Jurgen Klopp’s team has not kept a clean sheet in their last six league matches. That record is an unusual one for the Reds, who have been defensive sound in recent seasons.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last ten away games in the English top-flight, having recorded seven wins and three draws. The Reds have been prolific on their travels in the English top-flight, having scored at least two goals in six of their last seven away games.

However, Liverpool may be slightly light in attack for this clash with Darwin Nunez suspended, and Diogo Jota ruled out through injury. However, Brazilian forward Robert Firmino is expected to return to the squad after injury.

Conclusion

United are in disarray, despite the summer appointment of Erik ten Hag as head coach. The opening two results and performances of the season were awful. They now face a Liverpool team desperate to return to winning ways.

Klopp’s team need to kick-start their campaign, and we are backing them to do just that, even if it is not the 5-0 win of last season. The away win offers no value, so instead, we are backing Liverpool half-time/full-time, which offers slightly better value.

The other bet we are backing is over 2.5 goals scored, as both teams have been defensively vulnerable this season, and this could be a high-scoring encounter.

Our Tips: We are backing Liverpool half-time/full-time at odds of 8/5 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 1/2 (All odds are taken from Bet365)
