Prediction & odds for the game: Sheffield Wednesday (12/1) v Manchester City (2/11)

When: Wednesday, 4th March 2020 @ 7.45pm K.O

Where: Hillsborough Stadium

Sheffield Wednesday will attempt to cause a huge upset as they prepare to host Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Sheffield Wednesday

The second tier side seemed to be right in the mix for a place in the top six after the first few months of the campaign, but they’ve fallen off in a big way in recent weeks. Their focus doesn’t really seem to be on knuckling down and getting after that playoff place, and instead, there’s a lot more emphasis on hosting the Champions of England – which makes sense. If they can make it into the quarter-finals, it could be huge for the confidence of this club moving forward.

Wednesday’s poor run of form throughout the month of February began with a 1-1 draw against Barnsley, followed by two really poor defeats at the hands of Luton Town and Reading. They managed to pick up a point against Birmingham in a 3-3 thriller before securing a narrow 1-0 win over Charlton, but their 3-1 loss to Derby at the weekend seemingly put an end to any lingering hopes of a top six finish.

Manchester City

Manchester City’s record in domestic cup competitions speaks for itself, and as they attempt to retain the FA Cup after already retaining the Carabao Cup last weekend, many expect them to walk through to the final once again. Whether or not they can pull that off remains to be seen, but the popular theory is that they will be able to edge past Sheffield Wednesday with relative ease. Of course, the big problem for them is going to be potential complacency.

Back to back defeats against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur seemed to spur City back into life, and ever since they’ve gone on to win four in a row. They beat West Ham and Leicester in the Premier League, came from behind to beat Real Madrid in the first leg of their UCL tie and also beat Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup final.

Conclusion

Sheffield Wednesday’s best bet is to try and be conservative in the early going of the game before really going after City on the counter. At the very least they need to be hoping for a weakened side of some description from Pep Guardiola’s men, but even if that transpires, we’re still expecting to see City ease to victory here. It probably isn’t going to be the kind of one-sided domination that breaks records, but they are going to cement their place in the last eight of the FA Cup.

We believe City will score late and hang onto the win, ensuring they remain under the 2.5 goal bracket.

Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 2/11 and the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 15/8. (All odds are taken from bet365).
