Chelsea signing Robert Green makes sense

|

According to many media outlets, including Sky Sports, former England international goalkeeper Rob Green is having a medical at Premier League Chelsea ahead of completing a free move to Stamford Bridge.

At first glance, the move looks like a crazy one. The 38-year-old was released by Huddersfield in the summer after failing to play a single game in the Premier League last season.

Will be the third-choice goalkeeper for the Blues

At the minute, Green will be the Blues third-choice goalkeeper behind Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero. However, Courtois looks set to complete a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid before the transfer window shuts.

It seems inevitable that the Blues will find a new number one, with the likes of Stoke’s Jack Butland, Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel and Arsenal’s Petr Cech all linked with a move to south west London.

In his current position, Green is highly unlikely to see any Premier League action next season. He may get a run in the cup competitions if one of the first choice goalkeepers is injured though.

Advantages to signing Green

There are big advantages to signing Rob Green. One of those is the experience the former West Ham brings to the club. If for example, Courtois leaves and the Blues sign Butland, Green can pass on his experience and knowledge to the relative goalkeeping youngster. His experience also means that he is a reliable backup if he has to play.

He is certainly a better option than a youth team goalkeeper who may feel pressured by being put into the first-team at a young age.

However, arguably the biggest advantage of having Green at the club is that is homegrown, which means he helps the clubs quota in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The Blues are not exactly overflowing with homegrown talent, so having Green in the squad helps the London club meet the criteria. Green presence may also allow the Blues to sell one of their out-of-favour English players such as centre-back Gary Cahill or central midfielder Danny Drinkwater. Both may struggle for first-team football with the Blues in the new season, so they could move on this summer.

Green a clever signing

Chelsea has not lit the world up with their transfer dealings so far this summer, with midfielder Jorginho their only summer signing. No doubt there is plenty more activity to take place at the south west London club before the season kicks-off.

There could be more big-name signings or even a marquee signing this summer. However, people want to joke about the Blues signing Robert Green, it is a clever signing that will have bigger implications than just signing a third choice goalkeeper.

The signing of Robert Green will not get Chelsea fans excited. However, it was not designed to. He will not be the Blues biggest signing of the summer for the Blues.

However, Green’s signing makes sense, so the clubs supporters should not be disappointed by the move, as I believe new boss Maurizio Sarri knows what he is doing and the team will be stronger in the new season.
