Former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria has been handed an opportunity to rejoin former club Benfica.

The 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and as reported last week, Juventus have decided not to offer the World Cup winner a new deal.

However, as reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, new Portuguese league champions Benfica will try to tempt the Argentinian to rejoin the club he originally made his name at when he becomes available on 1 July.

It is believed that the Portuguese giants are not Di Maria’s only option with interest also coming from Saudi Arabia but it is the winger’s preference to continue his career in Europe.

Di Maria joined Benfica from hometown club Rosario Central in 2007 and scored 15 goals in 124 appearances in all competitions before earning a big-money move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, where he went on to win La Liga and the Champions League in 2014 at Benfica’s home stadium Estadio da Luz, in which Di Maria was given the man of the match award.
