Kylian Mbappe has cast fresh doubt over his long-term future at PSG, as the World Cup winner has insisted that he won’t be triggering his 12-month extension.

The recent claims mean that PSG now stands to lose their star asset on a free transfer next summer, which could potentially open the door to a sale this summer.

The news was broken by L’Equipe, via Fabrizio Romano, and has left PSG scrambling for clarification. The club has insisted that they won’t lose their star man on a free transfer. Therefore, a cash offer this summer could tempt the French champions to sell.

Mbappe has the option to extend his deal by 12 months before next summer, but if he opts against that decision, then he would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with teams from January 2024.

PSG has no plans to allow Mbappe to leave on a free transfer, meaning that an instant sale or agreement on a new deal are their only two options on the table. A number of clubs could finance a move for the World Cup winner this summer, with Real Madrid among the long-term admirers of the Frenchman.
