Newcastle United are closing in on a remarkable transfer for Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella.

The Magpies caught everybody off guard, as they made a $55 million bid for the Italian European Championship winner on the opening day of the summer transfer window.

Barella close to Newcastle move

Newcastle’s bid is expected to be accepted by Inter Milan, according to the Telegraph. According to reports, Barella is one of two planned signings in the midfield position this summer.

However, the 26-year-old was top of their shopping list, and they have caught their competition on the back foot. Liverpool was also in the market for the Italian midfielder, but Newcastle’s promise of Champions League action could sway the talented midfielder.

Barella played in last weekend’s Champions League final for Inter against Manchester City. He played 51 times across all competition for the Serie A giants last season, scoring nine goals and registering six assists.
