Premier League giants Liverpool have agreed a fee for highly-rated defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia from Southampton.

Lavia, 19, is set to clinch a $76m move to Anfield this week after the Reds accepted defeat in their pursuit of Brighton star Moises Caicedo– who has decided to move to Chelsea instead.

Romeo Lavia set for Liverpool switch

According to The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, the Reds must now convince the Belgian international that Merseyside is the right destination this summer with Chelsea also remaining in the hunt for the teenager despite tying up a deal worth $145m for Caicedo.

Liverpool’s attack-minded midfield lacked a stable anchor such as Lavia yesterday to fit things together and Jurgen Klopp remains desperate to add a number six after losing Fabinho and Jordan Henderson this summer to the Saudi Pro League.

The former Manchester City man has previously indicated he wishes to move to Stamford Bridge but with the Reds’ need for midfield reinforcements currently greater than Chelsea’s, Lavia may yet be convinced that he will receive more first-team opportunities this season at Anfield.
