MLS side DC United have seen their hopes of signing free agent Jesse Lingard dashed due to the MLS’ rules on salary caps.

According to the Washington Post’s Steven Goff, head coach Wayne Rooney has been left frustrated in his attempts to sign any free agents before the MLS squad deadline of September 13.

DC United miss out on free agent opportunities

According to sources close to the club, United were interested in taking Rooney’s former Manchester United teammate Jesse Lingard and ex-Premier League striker Andre Ayew until the end of the season on free transfers.

Speaking after United’s 4-0 convincing home win over Chicago Fire, all-time Red Devils record goalscorer Rooney also stated that he wanted to re-sign another former Old Trafford teammate, Ravel Morrison, who has been back training with the club in recent weeks.

He’s been brilliant,” said Rooney of the often temperamental 30-year-old who is looking for the 15th club of his career in a nomadic career that has taken him from England to the United States, via stops in Sweden, Mexico, and The Netherlands.
