Leeds United could be set to open the door for a stunning return to Elland Road for James Milner. However, reports in the Mail claim that the Whites could only stand a realistic chance if their Premier League status is assured.

It is believed that Brighton still lead the race to sign the former England international when his contract expires with Liverpool at the end of the 2022-23 season.

However, the Seagulls could face a late fight to get the deal over the line, as Leeds could emerge as a leading contender if they are able to secure their Premier League status.

Milner and the Whites have previous history, as the England star made his big breakthrough with the club back in 2002. He made his debut for the Whites against West Ham in November 2002, becoming the second-youngest player to play in the Premier League.

Milner later became the youngest scorer in the Premier League, before the record was broken two years later. However, Milner’s time at Elland Road came to an end in 2004 after Leeds were forced to sell the boyhood fan to Newcastle United.

An emotional return to Leeds would certainly interest Milner, but only if they are able to maintain their top-flight status.
