Manchester United face tough test against Wolves

|

This weekend’s Premier League action has certainly been exciting, to the point where you couldn’t really find all too many boring games (aka none) on Match of the Day. While that isn’t exactly the best of indicators, we can still say with some confidence that it’s been a great weekend of Premier League action. With that being said, it isn’t all said and done just yet: as two teams have yet to square off to complete the set of weekly matches.

Those two teams are Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United, also known as two of the ‘OGs’ when it comes to being a truly great historical club in the realms of English football. Sir Alex Ferguson always said he had a soft spot for Wolves, and it’s not exactly hard to see why. After many years of lingering down towards the second tier, they’re starting to be recognised as one of the best clubs in the country for the first time in a long time.

A huge game

United got themselves off to a really good start last weekend, battering Chelsea 4-0 and really making a statement that they’re serious about their ambitions for the upcoming season. Wolves, on the other hand, were really unlucky when it came to getting over the finish line against Leicester. They probably should’ve won the game but the goal that they scored was ruled out for handball, and while it worked with the ‘letter of the law’, the law itself certainly seems a little bit odd.

Wolves have beaten the Red Devils in their last few games which, in itself, should be a big enough warning sign for United that they aren’t going to walk through Nuno’s men – regardless of whether or not they’ll have one eye on the Torino game during the week.

Fighting back

Nobody really knows one way or another what kind of season we’re going to get from Wolves, because there are so many different factors that could dictate that. United, on the other hand, could fancy themselves as outside contenders to finish third. Liverpool and City were less than convincing in very different ways over the course of the weekend, and while United probably aren’t going to be contending for the title, you just never know what could happen if you build up a bit of momentum in this league.

The first 20 minutes or so are going to be really important one way or another, because it could, and should, dictate which direction this encounter is going to go in. The Molineux crowd are going to really be behind their boys, and while the two-legged tie against Torino is incredibly important, there are still a lot of reasons to be excited about this game.

The bookmakers are favouring United but history tells us that you should never rule out Nuno’s men. Whoever gets the three points will have a huge surge of momentum behind them, which could be vital ahead of what is bound to be a hectic few months leading up to Christmas.
