Juventus have been given a 10-point deduction, effectively ending their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

The Old Lady have been docked 10 points by the Federal Court of Appeal for capital gains violations after an initial 15-point deduction was overturned on appeal by Italy’s highest sporting court, the Italian National Olympic Committee, who ordered the case to be re-examined.

Juventus set to miss out on European football following penalty

Coach Max Allegri, who is now more determined to stay at Juve than ever, was furious over the timing of the penalty, saying “It was a strange situation, 10 minutes before the match, the sentence came out. Juventus are used to winning, we have to close ranks”.

The decision, which means the Old Lady drop from second to seventh in Serie A, came just before Juventus’ embarrassing 4-1 defeat away at Tuscan side Empoli, with many commentators believing the ruling had played a huge factor in the minds of the players during the match.

Juve’s defeat on Monday now leaves them five points behind AC Milan, who occupy the last Champions League spot, with two matches left to play- and Juve host Milan on Sunday night.

According to Italian news agencies, a high court hearing on 26 October will decide whether a further trial will take place.
