Watford, Chelsea and Fulham claim Premier League victories

|

Sunday’s action in gameweek three of the Premier League was nearly as dramatic as Saturday’s with goals galore. Here is what happened on the second day of gameweek three:

Hornets maintain hundred per cent record

After a goalless first half, Watford recorded a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road to maintain their hundred per cent record in the top-flight this season.

The Hornets took the lead on 53 minutes, as Etienne Capoue found Roberto Pereyra and the Uruguayan playmaker cut inside before finding the top corner superbly. The home side doubled their lead with just 19 minutes left on the clock.

Greek full-back Jose Holebas fired what looked like a far cross that somehow beat Wayne Hennessey and found the top corner. The visitors looked to be back in the game on 78 minutes, as Max Meyer found Wilfried Zaha whose low effort from a tight angle beat the previously excellent Ben Foster.

The victory means that Watford find themselves third-place in the top-flight table. The Eagles meanwhile are 11th place in a table that means very little at this stage of the campaign.

Mitrovic double sinks Burnley at Craven Cottage

Fulham recorded their first Premier League victory since their return to the top-flight by beating Burnley 4-2 at Craven Cottage. Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic proved to be the matchwinner with a brace.

The Cottagers took the lead on three minutes, as summer signing Jean-Michael Seri’s long-range powerful effort flew into the top corner of the net. The Clarets were level seven minutes later, as Jeff Hendrick saw an initial effort blocked by Denis Odoi, only for the midfielder to score with the rebound.

Mitrovic scored his first of the match on 36 minutes, as the Serbian international headed home at the far post from a superb Tom Cairney cross. Two minutes later the striker doubled his goal tally, this time heading home from a superb Luciano Vietto cross.

Burnley got a goal back on 41 minutes, as centre-back James Tarkowski scored a tap-in from close range after Ben Mee had headed a Charlie Taylor cross back towards goal. Andre Schurrle hit the bar ten minutes into the second half. However, the German did get on the scoresheet with seven minutes left on the clock, firing home after a Mitrovic effort had smashed off the bar.

The win was a massive one for the Cottagers, as the Londoner’s look to stay clear of the relegation dogfight. Meanwhile, Burnley have collected just one point from their opening three league games of the campaign.

Chelsea continue good start under Sarri at Newcastle

Chelsea kept up their stellar record under new boss Maurizio Sarri by recording a 2-1 win at Newcastle in the late kick-off on Sunday.

The clash looked to be heading for a goalless draw until the last 15 minutes. Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar was adjudged to have fouled Marcos Alonso in the penalty area and Eden Hazard made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Newcastle equalised with just seven minutes left on the clock. Spanish striker Joselu headed home from a superb DeAndre Yedlin cross. The goal was allowed despite that fact that Yedlin had appeared to elbow Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud in the build-up to the goal.

However, Chelsea were not to be denied the victory and snatched the victory with three minutes left on the clock. A move that involved Giroud and Willian eventually saw Alonso’s shot on goal Yedlin and find its way past Martin Dubravka.

The victory means that the Blues currently occupy second place in the Premier League table. Newcastle are already languishing at the wrong end of the table, having picked up just one point from a possible nine this season.

Can Chelsea and Watford maintain their winning starts to the Premier League campaigns in their next games?
