Champions League final could be the pinnacle for Spurs - Soccer Times

Champions League final could be the pinnacle for Spurs

|

As we all now know, Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday night. The team has done superbly well to get to the final. However, could their achievement be the pinnacle for Tottenham under head coach Mauricio Pochettino?

Pochettino has done a sterling job

Firstly, Pochettino has done a sterling job with the north London club. He has helped Spurs become a mainstay in the Premier League top-four in recent years. Prior to that they had flirted with the Champions League spot but were never part of the establishment.

The former Southampton boss created a team that played nice football on a small budget compared to their rivals. In many ways, he has produced the dream of most teams outside the top-six in the English top-flight.

Pochettino has helped create the current team by some outstanding recruitment. However, excellent recruitment only gets you so far. Sometimes you need cold hard cash to get to the next level.

Tottenham hierarchy will not change their transfer policy

Pochettino has had to be smart in the transfer market, as the club’s hierarchy has given him very little backing when it comes to bringing in players. Chairman Daniel Levy keeps tight control of the purse strings at the north London club.

The club does have wealthy owners, but they are not prepared to invest their own money in the club it seems like some owners of other clubs in the Premier League. There is a feeling that the club’s owners are just happy pocketing the tv revenue from making the Champions League.

The fans are no doubt happy at making the Champions League on a regular basis, there is no doubt that would love their team to win the Premier League. In terms of progress in the English top-flight, they have not made any in recent seasons.

The main reason for their stalling is not just their rivals improving. It is the fact Pochettino has been unable to strengthen his squad that has been the problem. Despite that fact, he has stayed loyal to the club from north London.

There has been speculation that he has now become frustrated by the club’s lack of ambition. If that is true, then there could be trouble ahead for Spurs.

A big summer ahead

It is hard to see Tottenham progressing from their current position in the Premier League, without much-needed investment in the team.

This summer could be a big one for Spurs. In truth, the final seemed like a massive missed opportunity for them, as they played nowhere near their best, while Liverpool also failed to produce their best form in Madrid.

If media reports are to be believed, then both the future of Pochettino and Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen in north London are both in question. Eriksen has struggled for form in the second half of the season, with speculation maybe affecting his mindset. Reportedly he is a target for Spanish giants Real Madrid this summer.

Both Pochettino and Eriksen may be thinking that maybe Tottenham will never be in such a good position in the future and that their appearance may be the pinnacle for the current team.

Can Tottenham ever develop beyond their current position?
