Manchester United squad needs a complete revamp

Whatever happens in today’s final Premier League games of the weekend, Manchester United will finish outside the league’s top-four. The Red Devils have quite simply been shocking under two different bosses this season. However, United icon and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will reportedly oversee a mass clear-out of the underperforming squad this summer, backed by the club’s hierarchy.

Is there many  players that United fans want to keep?

The list of players that United fans want to leave would far outweigh the list of players they want to leave the club this summer. In fact, it is difficult to find many players that the Red Devils want to stay out of the current bunch.

There have been that many poor displays from that many players over the past few seasons. Even the usually brilliant David de Gea has been uncharacteristically poor in recent months. Even French World Cup winner Paul Pogba seems to divide opinion amongst the fans. His displays have been inconsistent all season. However, there seems little doubt that on his day he is United’s best player.

Due to his inconsistent displays, England international Luke Shaw won the clubs Player of the Year award. In reality, Shaw is probably one of the few players still wanted at the club for next season.

Who will arrive at United next season?

With the likes of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera just a few players set for the Manchester United exit door, there is a sense that the Red Devils will be a much different team next season.

According to the Daily Express, there are nine names on Solskjaer’s summer shopping list, as he seeks to rebuild a failing Red Devils squad. The names on the shopping list include Portuguese midfielder duo Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix, Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, West Ham midfielder Declan Rice and Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane.

It remains to be seen which players arrive at Old Trafford. However, some of the aforementioned stars would no doubt improve the Red Devils starting line-up and squad.

Despite the club’s worldwide reputation, United have to compete with the fact that they do not have Champions League football to offer any prospective new signings next season. If the Red Devils are competing with other clubs for players signatures, that could be a deciding factor for some players.

Will struggle to challenge for the title next season

During his reign at Old Trafford, former United boss Jose Mourinho stated that getting the Red Devils to finish runners-up last season was the biggest achievement of his managerial career. Some laughed, but they are not laughing now.

The United squad’s lack of sheer quality and character has been obvious this season. With Liverpool and Manchester City setting a new standard this season, Manchester United have a lot of work to do to be title challengers next season. Solskjaer has major work to do to build to get United back to the pinnacle of the English game. It is a big challenge for a coach who is relatively inexperienced in top-level management.

If he makes a poor start to next season, then the former-United striker will be under major pressure. For the affable Norwegian’s sake, hopefully, he can rebuild his squad enough this summer to enjoy a far more productive campaign in season 2019/20.
