Aston Villa v Everton preview, prediction and odds

|

Aston Villa head into Friday night’s home game against ambitious Everton looking for their first Premier League point since winning promotion last season. Meanwhile, the visitors will hope to continue their solid start to the new campaign.

Aston Villa (odds to win 9/4)

The Villans head into this clash after back-to-back defeats in the Premier League against Tottenham and last time out Bournemouth. The 2-1 home reverse against the Cherries was particularly disappointing, as it looked like a game that the Villans could have taken something from. This season’s poor start to the campaign means that Villa have now lost 14 of their last 15 games in the top-flight, dating back to their last spell in the Premier League in season 2015/16.

Dean Smith’s side will also be hoping to improve a woeful home record in the Premier League, as the Villans have lost seven of their last eight home games at Villa Park. Their fans will be hoping that the current team can right some of the wrongs of their last spell in the Premier League.

Everton (odds to win 23/20)

Everton have taken four points from a possible six and are favourites to record a second league win of the season in the Midlands. The Toffees recorded a 1-0 win over Watford last time out at Goodison Park. The good start to the campaign has contributed to the Toffees six-game unbeaten run in the Premier League. Marco Silva’s side have plenty of attacking talent in the likes of Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Bernard and Italian starlet Moise Kean.

However, it is in defence were the Merseysider’s have thrived in recent months. They are the only team in the Premier League not to concede a goal this season.

A record of ten clean sheets in their last 13 league matches rather blows away the myth of Silva team’s not being able to defend. Incredibly, only reigning Premier League champions Manchester City have conceded fewer goals in 2019 in the English top-flight than the visitors.

Despite the positives, there is one major negative for the Toffees and that is their recent away form. They have drawn their last three away matches in the Premier League while winning just once in six games on their travels. Everybody connected with the Merseyside club will be hoping they enjoy a more positive campaign on the road this season.

Prediction

Villa will be desperate to record their first Premier League win since February 2016. However, there seems to be a new steely determination about Everton this season. Had they taken their chances in their opening games the results could have been far more impressive.

The Villans were pretty strong at Villa Park last season in the Championship. However, the step up to the top-flight is a big one and Everton looks like the sort of side who are ready to finally fulfil their potential.

We are going for the away win in this clash. The Toffees have looked very solid defensively so far this season and their highly talented attacking players are due a return to form. It seems unlikely that this will be a goal-fest, so backing the under 2.5 goals at odds of 11/10.

Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 23/20 and/or the under 2.5 goals at 11/10 (All odds taken from Bet365).
