On Friday night, Bournemouth recorded a 3-1 victory at Southampton in a south coast derby. England international forward Callum Wilson scored a stoppage-time third goal to seal the victory for the Cherries.

The win means that Eddie Howe’s team have now recorded back-to-back wins after a victory last time out over Everton. Wilson has been a key to Bournemouth’s attacking style of play in recent seasons. Yet the former Coventry striker never seems to get the praise he deserves.

Wilson has produced attacking returns in every league game

If you are a keen follower of Premier League Fantasy Football then Wilson is a divisive figure. If you are a keen fan of FPL check out our gameweek six ones to watch. He started the season as one of the bargains of the campaign at £8million. He produced assists in the Cherries opening three games.

People started losing faith in the forward, but since then he has scored four goals in his last three top-flight appearances. Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the only other Premier League player to produce attacking returns in every game this season. The 30-year-old has a chance to add to his goal tally against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Wilson is always a handful for opposition defences. He has a touch of everything needed to be a top Premier League striker. Not only does is he strong like an old-fashioned English centre forward, but he also has pace to burn too.

Maybe the reason he is underrated is that the striker is not quite as clinical as he could be. However, with age, he seems to be becoming more ruthless in front of goal. He gets his fair share of goals considering he doesn’t play in a top team, scoring 14 top-flight goals last season. At his current rate of scoring, he should at least match that this season.

A big season ahead

This is a big season for Callum Wilson with many aims and objectives to achieve. His first aim this season will be to stay fit and injury-free. If he can do that, then the next aim will be to produce consistent returns in front of goal.

Friday nights win moved Bournemouth to the heady heights of third place in a very congested Premier League table. However, staying in the top-four is not really a realistic aim for the Cherries this season.

Eddie Howe’s team primary aim is a top-half finish, something which they are currently outsiders to do this season. If Wilson can stay consistent there is no reason why the Cherries cannot seal a top-ten finish this season. The middle of the table is so open at the moment, with every team beating each other, proven by the Cherries win over Everton prior to their win at St Mary’s.

A big carrot for Wilson, if he needs one, is that if he continues to impress then he will in the England squad for Euro 2020. He may be behind Harry Kane in the pecking order, but he would still have a big chance at a major international tournament.

Maybe Callum Wilson is underrated due to the fact he spent the early years in the lower leagues. However, times are changing and we salute you MR Wilson and long may your goalscoring form continue.
