On Tuesday, Real Madrid appointed Carlo Ancelotti as their head coach. The news came as a massive surprise to everybody including his club Everton, who now have to find a replacement. The Toffees are searching for another new head coach just 18 months after the appointment of the Italian boss.
The Everton hierarchy held a meeting at 3 PM on Tuesday to form a long list of potential replacements for Ancelotti. Here are some of the favourites for the vacancy:
Nuno Espirito Santo
The Portuguese boss resigned as Wolves head coach after leading the team from the Midlands back to the top-flight while achieving two seventh-place finishes before this season ended with Wolves in 13th place. He has previously enjoyed success at Valencia before his switch to the Midlands club.
One thing that may concern Everton is that Espirito Santo seemed to lose the fans and players in his last campaign with Wolves. The former Los Ches boss has also been linked with the vacant job at Crystal Palace.
Eddie Howe
The boyhood Evertonian was linked with the job on Merseyside before the appointment of Ancelotti. He was a highly-rated head coach before his Bournemouth team suffered relegation in season 2019/20. After going down, the 43-year-old decided to resign from his position with the Cherries.
Howe recently turned down the chance to take the Celtic job. It seems unlikely he would spurn the opportunity to manage the Toffees if given the chance.
David Moyes
The West Ham head coach has been connected with Everton for a long time. It was inevitable considering he spent 11 years with the Toffees. Reportedly Moyes was also in line for the job before the arrival of Ancelotti.
However, his next move was to West Ham, who he guided to a sixth-place in the Premier League this season. Moyes’ achievement looks set to land him a new deal with the Hammers. There is no doubt he has affection for Everton, but at the moment a return to his former club doesn’t seem to be in his best interests to move back to Merseyside.

Rafael Benitez
The Spanish head coach is out of work since leaving the Chinese club Dalian at the beginning of the year. The 61-year-old has previously had successful spells at Liverpool and Newcastle. He won the Champions League with the former in 2005.
His association with the red side of Merseyside could be a stumbling block, although he does still have a residence in the local area. The former Valencia head coach would need to hit the ground running at the Merseyside club to get the fans onside.
Antonio Conte
The Italian tactician left Inter after the Nerazzurri won Serie A. The former Chelsea head coach reportedly left the Italian champions because the club hierarchy refused to back him in the transfer market, with Inter in a poor financial state.
It seems unlikely that Conte would take the job at Everton. However, the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti also seemed unlikely. The Italian seems to be a major outsider for the vacancy.
A big appointment for Everton
Whoever is appointed as Everton head coach this summer must improve upon last season’s 10th place finish in the Premier League next season. The Toffees have a big summer ahead as they seek out a return to English football’s top table.
