According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United are once again chasing Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho. The report claims that the Red Devils will have to pay around £81.5m to sign the youngster.
The Red Devils have been long-term admirers of the young England international. In fact, there were claims that United saw at least one bid turned down for the winger last summer. It is in danger of becoming one of those stories that seem to do the rounds every transfer window if United cannot now complete a deal for the youngster.
Sancho one of the brightest young players in world football
In the last few years, Jadon Sancho has established himself as one of the brightest young players in world football. There are very few players in the game with the same potential as the former Manchester City trainee.
Last season the 21-year-old scored 16 goals and produced 14 assists in all competitions for Dortmund. However, incredibly his performance in the first half of the campaign was considered disappointing because he scored 19 goals and produced 16 assists in the Bundesliga and the Champions League last season. Those numbers are impressive for any player, let alone a player who is in his early twenties.
He will add another attacking dimension to United’s play
Manchester United have some superb attacking players in the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial. However, Sancho would offer Solskjaer’s team a different dimension.
He is the tricky winger, who not only scores goals but creates them. None of United’s current forward players has that sort of profile. He is the sort of player that fits the bill perfectly for United, who often hit teams with rapid counter-attacks. Sancho is perfect for that style of play.
The Red Devils would be a far more potent attacking threat with the young winger in their team. A move to the team from Manchester would arguably be a step up from Dortmund, who have gained a reputation as a highly unpredictable team that often flatters to deceive.
United need to strengthen to mount a realistic title challenge
In the early stages of last season, Manchester United looked like they were realistic challengers for the Premier League title. However, in the end, the Red Devils fell short quite simply because arch-rivals Manchester City were a better team, with a more astute head coach in Pep Guardiola.
Individually, United have worse players than the Citizens and United’s only hope of mounting a stronger challenge next season is by bringing in better players. Sancho is the class of player that should certainly help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s challenge for the English top-flight title.
The signing of Jadon Sancho alone will not make Manchester United all-conquering. It would be a step in the right direction, though, if Sancho’s career so far is anything to go by anyway.
