French club Paris Saint-Germain have become renowned for their big-spending in the last decade. Their ultimate aim is to not only dominate French football but also become top dogs in the European game.

That spending has not yet brought European success and last season the Parisians saw pipped to the Ligue One title by Lille. This summer is a big one in the transfer market and the club from the French capital seem to be changing their big-spending habits. They may well have spent around £54million on Inter full-back Achraf Hakimi, but they have also negotiated some cheaper deals too.

Free transfers the name of the game

The French club has boxed clever in the transfer market this summer. They have already signed free agents Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum, while the Italian number one Gianluigi Donnarumma has also agreed on a five-year deal too. The highly-rated stopper left AC Milan after his contract expired. The 22-year-old could well turn out to be the biggest bargain of the summer.

All three players are of immense quality and experience, even Donnarumma despite his tender years has made over 250 competitive appearances for the Rossoneri.

Ramos has enjoyed a trophy-laden decade and a half at Real Madrid. He was a big leader in the dressing room in the Spanish capital. His winning mentality could well prove vital to the French team. Wijnaldum is another player who has won every trophy there is to win while at Liverpool. The Dutchman reportedly turned down a switch to Barcelona in favour of a switch to Paris. The Netherlands midfielder provides work rate, energy and no lack of quality.

PSG look in good shape for next season

They may not have won the French Ligue One title last season under Mauricio Pochettino, but the Parisians are in good shape to come back even stronger next season. The Argentinian head coach is still highly rated, despite PSG’s failure to win Ligue One and the Champions League last season.

This season may be their best chance of claiming glory, as they have strengthened their squad in key areas, and maybe more importantly don’t look like losing any of their star player Kylian Mbappe, with most clubs seemingly still in a period of austerity after Covid-19.

The Parisians should reclaim their Ligue One title, as Lille have not only lost their head coach Christophe Gautier but have also lost goalkeeper Mike Maignan and influential midfielder Boubakary Soumare. More players are expected to leave LOSC this summer too. They will have to rebuild their squad.

The Champions League may be a tougher nut to crack. However, with Euro 2020 taking place there has been very little transfer activity from the big teams likely challenging for European football’s elite competition. Ever since the club’s current owners came in the Champions League has been their holy grail. The summer signings they have made so far are certainly not going to impede their chances of being successful that’s for sure. It’s is certainly not a case of its now or never for the French club, though.
