Prediction and odds for the game: Fleetwood Town (11/2) vs Everton (4/9)

We are backing draw/Everton at odds of 10/3

When: Tuesday 23 August 2022, Kick-off 19:45

Where: Highbury Stadium

On Tuesday night, Fleetwood Town hosts Everton in the second round of the Carabao Cup, as the home side looks to cause an upset in a north west derby match.

Fleetwood Town

The home side has made a mixed start to the new campaign in League One, taking six points from their opening five league matches. However, they are unbeaten in five games, although their last three matches have all produced draws.

A feature of Town’s game of late has been solid defensive displays, as they have kept clean sheets in three of their last four outings while conceding just once. That is a record that could help them against Everton’s goal-shy attack.

Fleetwood has a recent mixed record in the League Cup of late. A 1-0 win in the first round of the competition against Wigan ended a two-game losing run for the north west team in the League Cup.

One of the ties in Fleetwood’s short losing streak was a 5-2 defeat against Everton at Highbury in 2020. They will be hopeful of avoiding another such a result in this clash.

Everton

The Toffees have made a poor start to the new Premier League campaign. Frank Lampard’s team has picked up just a point from their opening three matches of the season. Last time out, they needed an 86th-minute equaliser from winger Demarai Gray to snatch a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest.

In truth, Frank Lampard’s team has not been terrible. However, they have lacked a cutting edge in attack, with veteran Salomon Rondon currently their only fit central forward. Their lame attack has cost them points this season. The Toffees are seeking out fresh, forward options, but they won’t arrive in time for this clash.

Everton has a poor recent record in the League Cup, which is the only domestic cup competition they have never won. The men from Merseyside exited the Carabao Cup to Championship QPR last season at the third-round stage of the competition on penalty kicks. However, the previous season the Toffees made it to the quarter-finals of the competition, only to suffer a 2-0 home defeat against Manchester United.

The visitors have a decent recent away record in the Carabao Cup, though, as they have won four of their last five away matches in the competition.

Conclusion

Fleetwood has been prone to a draw of late, and this looks like it could be a classic cup upset. However, Everton have at least looked more solid in defence in recent matches and should have enough quality to see off Town.

Our first tip is draw/Everton, as the Toffees may well struggle to overcome their League One opponents at first. However, we believe they will come out on top in the end. The other bet we are backing is under 2.5 goals, as Fleetwood has been solid in defence, and Everton has struggled in attack this season.

Our Tips: We are backing draw/Everton at odds of 10/3 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 11/10. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
