Arsenal have sold Spanish defender Pablo Mari to Monza on a permanent basis.

The 29-year-old Spanish central defender has joined the newly promoted Serie A club after impressing on a season-loan loan in Italy this term, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Last October, Mari was stabbed in a supermarket in Milan but made a miraculous recovery and returned to action less than three months later and has started Monza’s last 17 league matches, helping guide the club to safety with five matches to go in their first season in the Italian top flight.

Pablo Mari leaves Arsenal for Monza

Mari’s career has taken an upturn after a dismal time in North London in which the defender only made 14 appearances in three seasons for Arsenal after signing from Brazilian club Flamengo.

Mari will cost Monza a fee of around $7.5m and could be joined at the Stadio Brianteo with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with negotiations between the 41-year-old striker and owner Silvio Berlusconi believed to be going well.
