Reds and Spurs make it to the Champions League knockout stages

|

On Tuesday night, a number of teams found out their Champions League, with some big-name English teams scraping through to the knockout stages of the competition. Here is what happened on a drama-filled night of action:

Liverpool record narrow win over Napoli

Liverpool recorded a narrow 1-0 win over group rivals Napoli to sneak through into the knockout stages of the competition. The night’s results meant that Jurgen Klopp’s team finished the group in second place.

Liverpool missed a good chance through James Milner and Mohamed Salah, while at the other end Napoli’s Marek Hamsik fired an effort over the bar. The Reds did take the lead on 34 minutes and it was that man Salah who was once again on target for the Merseysiders.

The Egyptian forward dribbled past Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly and fired an effort into the far corner past David Ospina in the visitor’s goal. Liverpool continued to have the better chances with Salah and James Milner going close.

However, as the game reached its latter stages the visitors mounted a late charge. Sadio Mane and effort saved, while Napoli’s Jose Callejon fired over from close range at the back post.

Mane should have sealed the game, but put an effort wide of goal after being put through on goal. Napoli came agonisingly close to equalising close to equalising in stoppage-time.

A long-ball from the Napoli left found substitute Arkadiusz Milik, who looked set to equalise, only for an excellent save by Alisson keep the forward’s effort out. The save kept the Reds in the competition and demoted Napoli to the Europa League in the New Year.

Spurs pick up a famous draw at the Nou Camp

Tottenham produced a draw 1-1 with Catalan giants Barcelona at the Nou Camp, which was enough to see the side from London progress to the knockout stages.

Barcelona were already through to the knockout stages, so rested a number of key players. However, the Spanish champions took the lead on seven minutes. Ousmane Dembele beat Kyle Walker-Peters for pace and dummied Harry Winks before firing home from close-range.

The home side came close to doubling their lead, as Philippe Coutinho hit the outside of the post with a whipped strike on goal.

At the other end of the pitch, Jasper Cillessen produced a superb low save from an effort by Christian Eriksen on 49 minutes. The Dutch goalkeeper was in the action once again with 15 minutes left on the clock, as he did well to keep out a Lucas Moura header.

Coutinho hit the woodwork once again before the visitors scored the crucial equaliser on 85 minutes. Harry Kane produced a superb ball from the left, which Moura turned home past Cillessen.

Danny Rose fired a late chance over the bar, but in the end, it mattered little, as Inter’s 1-1 draw with PSV in the other game saw Spurs through to the knockout stages. The north london side are likely to be underdogs in the knockout stages after finishing second in the group.

Tuesday’s other Champions League results
