Can the new-look Germany squad revive their fortunes?

|

Germany have experienced a terrible year in terms of international football. Joachim Low’s side exited last summer’s World Cup at the group stage before finishing bottom of their Nations League group containing France and the Netherlands.

Many were surprised when Low managed to keep his position as Germany head coach after two such poor tournament showings. However, Low promised that he would make changes and boy has he made changes.

In fact, the Germany head coach pulled a number of surprises with his latest squad to face Serbia in a friendly and the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier.

Stalwart left out of the latest squad

The main changes that Low has made is the omission from the squad of Bayern Munich stars Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Muller. All three players had been stalwarts of the squad for a long time.

However, all three struggled to find their best form in the national team. They were such big characters in the team that their underperformance had a big effect on the team. Low has told the trio that they will not feature again for the national side.

Bright young players

Germany has a production line of talent. It seems like it is now time for the younger stars to shine for the senior national side. The likes of Leroy Sane, Timo Werner, Serge Gnabry and Thilo Kehrer have established big reputations for themselves in recent seasons in Europe’s top leagues.

The aforementioned four are just some of the talent available to Low, who was hardly scratching around trying to find quality players to fill his squad. The Bundesliga is full of potential young Wunderkinds waiting for their chance in the senior national side.

Three uncapped players Niklas Stark, Lukas Klostermann and Maximilian Eggestein. Like many of the new look German squad, all three are in their early twenties and could be ready to stake claims for a regular spot in the starting line-up of their national side.

The latest squad contains just over half the players selected in the World Cup 2018 squad. The number of changes to the squad shows just how poor Germany have been in recent months.

It seems that Joachim Low is starting from a near blank canvas judging by his squad selection. It will be fascinating to see how the talented group of players do in the upcoming games. The team that won the World Cup in 2014 were very young and the current group will be looking to emulate their successors.

One of the favourites to win Euro 2020

Despite their abysmal performances in their last two tournaments, Germany are still one of the favourites to win Euro 2020. History has told us to never write the Germans off when it comes to major tournaments.

Low has plenty of work to do to attempt to weld together this undoubtedly talented group of inexperienced players into a team. Looking at some of the names in their squad, it will take Germany no time to get back on their feet on the international stage.

Can Joachim Low’s squad changes lead to a revival in Germany’s fortunes?
